PS2 Laser Issues

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-12 8:47

Ok, I need a serious answer here:

About a year ago, my modded PS2 (w/ Messiah 2) began to boot backups much less frequently, and when they did boot, video and audio were sometimes choppy.  The problem worsened until I could get NOTHING to boot except a few burned PSOne games and a DVDRip of DoDonPachi Daioujyou.  I have quite a large library, and tested almost 100 games.  No dice.  At the time, I thought it was basically a brick.  I bought a new modded PS2, and thought no more of it.

Recently, I had to sell my new PS2 in an emergency financial situation, so my thoughts went back to the "broken" PS2.  To anyone who knows a little about the console--might this just be a laser problem, and would buying a new laser assembly + replacing it fix the problem if so?  If that is the case, how difficult/complex of a job would it be to replace it?  I'd really like to get it up and running again; buying another modded PS2 really isn't financially feasible for me right now.

I DO have a job.  A new PS2 simply isn't in the budget right now--all availible income that doesn't go into food/rent/gas goes into plane ticket + tutition for next semester.

This is my only option for playing games right now, so stop being a douchebag and post something helpful.

I had similar, but it turned out to be the A/V connectors on my TV and my PS2.  Try new cords, Mad Catz makes a 3rd party universal connecter that's about $10ish and works well(for MadCatz's usual expectations, anyway).

Other than that, it'd be disc/laser.

Well, I'm sure the problem doesn't lie with the connectors--I use the TV with my other consoles all the time and I have like 3 sets of a/v cables that all test out fine.

So once again...would buying a new laser assembly + installing fix all my problems?

Have you tried reburning discs or trying official copies?

If official copies don't work...you've probably going to have to look into a replacement, yea.

Yeah, officials don't work.  Plus, the 100+ games I've tried at this point have all worked great for years (I take good care of em) and have booted in a friend's modded PS2 so I know that's not the problem.

So, looks like I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and try to install my own laser...can anyone point me to a good guide, or am I on my own here?

You might as well just buy a laser and then microwave it, itll give the same end result as trying to install itand probably be more fun.
