File getting corrupted for no apparent reason

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-11 6:32

Recently, I've noticed how some files that I've had on my hard drive for a long time, particularly archives downloaded from /t, get corrupted for no apparent reason. Even after downloading them completely with Azureus, I have to remove the torrent and force the program to recheck the files I've downloaded to make sure it's 100% complete. Same also goes for a bunch of pictures I moved from one partition to another. A few are getting corrupted as well. What's going on here? My hard drive is going dead?

Maybe, but it can also be because of a corrupted filesystem (are you using windows with NTFS or FAT?). Try to run chkdisk to see if it finds something.

Backup your files because you never know when your hard drive dies.

And just an advice. If you can, don't use chkdisk because it sucks pretty hard. Search for some similar software. And remember: google is your friend.

OH SHI-
I fail at quoting.

I'm using an NTFS file system for all hard drives. And, yeah, chkdsk sucks ass. Whatever happened to Scandisk and why did M$ get rid of it in XP? Any good alternatives?

Scandisk still exists (just type "scandisk" in the run dialog).

BTW, I recommend SpinRite, although it doesn't check the filesystem, just the platter.

Don't change these.
