Drag n Drop Songs to an Ipod

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-10 20:14

I am figuring if I wan to get an iPod and I need to confirm this once and for all with people who own iPods.

When you wan to transfer songs to your iPod to listen to, can you just plug the iPod to your PC, and drag-drop mp3s into it?

Or do u HAVE to use iTunes to tranfer the music?

Not out of the box - you have to use iTunes. But third party software like Anapod Explorer will let you drag-and-drop / copy-and-paste files into your iPod.

I don't own an Ipod so I dunno if you can drag and drop, but I do know that Winamp can transfer your music onto the Ipod now. So at least you have an alternative.

I thought so.

SO WHY did Apple decide that we HAVE to use iTunes to tranfer songs? What is so wrong wit just dragging and dropping mp3s to it? Isnt that more user friendly?

Does the iPod Linux project removes this requirement?

You do know that the iPod doesn't give a shit about file names and directories, but instead groups and displays files based on those faggy and broken id3 tags, right?
Of course you have to use iTunes, otherwise how are you supposed to fix all the tags by hand?

Get an iAudio M3.

Slimmer than an iPod, LCD on the remote, can play OGG, WMA, FLAC, basically all the formats, has a FM radio, can record to mp3 from the builtin mic or from the radio or from the line-in... oh did I mention YOU FUCKING PLUG THE USB CABLE IN AND DRAG YOUR FILES AND FOLDERS ON IT

In theory at least, you can manage your iPod tags reasonably without iTunes.  I use a nice little program called ID3TagIt to keep my shit in order--genres, etc.  Then I can use WinAmp or whatever to transfer them.

Whatever, it's not that bad.  Despite the fact that 9/10 mp3 players nowadays trump the iPod's feature set, Apple will be sure to add these features slowly one by one in newer, more expensive iterations which many people will surely purchase--despite the fact that they already own 2 or 3 older iPods.  Wheee.  Hey, at least we look hyper cool and trendy with our shiny white bricks hanging off our belts.

Yes, but it doesn't work.

Hey, it's better than using a CD player.  Can't enjoy music when it skips every headbang.

Or just try iTunes. It's an awesome player, and if you don't use the store, it's as DRM-free as it gets.
When you use Apple products in general, there are a lot of benefits to attempt to do things the Apple way. iTunes and iPod integration is awesome, too bad if you can only see the clever marketing and not the benefits.

Or be a rebel and get a crap player that is awesome because it can play OGG files and doesn't make you a trend whore.

iTunes is hueg like XBOX.
I had an ipod, I loved it, once I was able to stop using iTunes. then the battery died. now the fucking thing sits on my bedside table like a shiny little brick, while I use a 512MB flash drive player that cost about AUD$90. despite the lack of display, and the lack of shuffle function, I consider it superior because IT DOESN'T COST $200 TO GET THE FUCKING BATTERY REPLACED. that and the drag and drop. but that's minor.
