Okay, the laptop that wouldn't boot is now fixed. I reformatted and installed XP pro sp2 on it. Only problem is now the device manager says there are multiple devices unknown.
looks like this.
-? Other Devices:
?! Multimedia Audio Controller
?! Network COntroller
?! PCI Modem
?! Video Controller
?! Video COntroller (VGA Compatible)
How do I get these to normal, is there a site with these updated drivers. I can't seem to find them on my xp pro cd anywhere. Thanks again.

Go to the manufacturer/retailer site and look for your Model of laptop. Download the driver they provide.
Seriously, what the fuck posses people like you to reformat a system if you have no clue how to do something as critical and yet simple as installing drivers.
You should perhaps have an idea what to do before you start.

Whoever you bought it from should have included a driver CD with the windows one.

I've reformatted plenty of times, but I had never ran into this problem before because i had never used a compaq. The problem is that it had home edition, i used a dell reinstall disk for pro that did not come with anything else. So you can see why i had the problem.

Your problem is that you don't know how to use Windows. If there are unknown devices, put drivers. Problem solved.

>>1 if you can connect to the web with it; do windows update a few times; there's a good chance the drivers will turn up there. At least that's what usually works for me.
you should have a driver cd, at least i did, my came with the windows cd, installation driver cds, programe cds, almost every form of back up cd you could need to revert the thing back to how it was if somehow the thing goes fucked.

So you used DELL reinstall disk to your Compaq laptop..... That might be why it doesn recognise any of your compaq laptop's component... seriously were you thinking that all laptops have the same innard?
