Browsing network shares from behind a router.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-03 20:19

I'm in a dorm. In my room I have a desktop and an ancient laptop. Since the Resnet only assigns us one IP, I use a router to connect both PC and laptop to the internet. Swapping off the router is not simple because of a buggy as shit activation process the ResNet service uses to bind to a MAC.

Is there a way to browse network shares even though I'm on my private subnet? I'm not in the mood to violate my universities AUP, so no uber-fast IP range share scanner type progs.

Good luck!

Even if you could get the ports forwarded, it is very likely that they'd be filtered by just about every device connecting you to the computer.

Filtered by what devices?
Just to be clear if I'm not behind the router I can see shares fine. It's just that the activation process makes it very difficult to swap back and forth between router and direct connection.

Filtered by every device that knows the meaning of a port. If those ports weren't filtered, every Windows box on the Internet would have been owned. Luckily, those ports are sometimes filtered now, so only 75% of all boxes are owned.

Do you have any idea what you're talking about?

There is nothing to filter the ports besides MY router. If I connect direct I can see the shares fine. The problem is that even if I forward the ports windows won't look for shares outside the 192.168. private subnet I am on.

K, I now read >>1, and ... I have no idea LOL!

You cannot do this because getting access to windows' special brand of shared folders requires that you be on the same private network as the targets. If you set your router to operate in switch mode, you would be able to access those folders but you'd be showing your network two different MAC addresses.

Now, strictly speaking, your ROUTER could see the shared folders, because your touter is on the same network as the shared folders. So if your PC has two NICs you could scrap the router, set up routed connection sharing, and be able to access those shared folders with just the PC (sharing the connection with the laptop in a firewalled, routed mode would disable the laptop from being able to see them, however).

This is stupid, it's easier just to unplug the router and plug the PC in direct when you need to steal copyrighted materials off your l33t dormfriends.

I said swapping isn't feasible. The fucking ResNet activiation is so buggy that it can take up to half a day before my connection is restored between activations.

With my router, I can choose what MAC it displays (picking from the connected ones, or the router's). Try something like that?

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-07 17:02

I used MAC cloning last year. Its easier but still a bitch. I want the lazy way of doinf stuff.

THERE IS NO LAZY WAY FAGGOT

Share scanners can see shares without being on the same subnet faggot.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-08 20:56

what the fuck is a share scanner

Wtf do you think? A program that scans for shares.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-09 14:27

Just ditch the fucking router, bitch.
2 NICs & internet connection sharing, FTW.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-09 17:48

The router is providing my Wifi.

Also, are you stupid, or do you just like telling people to do things the hard (stupid) way.

2 NIC's + ICS FTL

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-09 20:06

Yeah, cause wired = hard + stupid, huh?
NICs do Wifi, too.  It's called AdHoc, dumbass.
Y'know, like, maybe putting a (SECOND) wireless adapter in the desktop. Or is that too much for you to comprehend? You've got it in your head that you HAVE to use the router that you're not even considering anything without it. If it weren't for that, you would have had this solved AGES ago.
You + Everything you say = FAIL

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-09 20:20

Another NIC = another 10 - 25 dollars, more for a Wifi card.
Setting up 2 NIC's, AdHoc, and ICS = time.
If my main computer goes down, no Wifi for the laptop. That's no good.

How is this a better setup than just using a router?

My question is how to see shares from behind a router. If you don't know how and I say I won't remove the rotuer than don't fucking tell me to remove the router.

in the time you've taken to write all these things you could have been making money at work (like I am right now) and/or driving to the store to buy the wireless NIC you need to cure your terminal retardation

1) I'm a student, I don't work.
2) You're still a fucking moron because you didn't refute anything else I said.
