What's the problem? Won't run at all? Runs at wrong speed? Crashes at some point?

PS. world4ch is a secret organisation of mind-readers.

It runs into the menus, but won't go ingame.

What do you mean by "won't"? You get a black screen? Does it crash? Or does it act like you didn't click the option?

steam steam lol

I think it's something wrong on your windows or HL then, because my XP-Pro runs it smooth as strawberry mashmarrows.

Try cleaing your CD and then re-installing HL, try downloading different versions of HL. Try other versions of HL (try both down and upgrading).

Stop using Internet Explorer

It won't run on my system either; original HL1 disc, from when the game was first released. Get Steam, and download the game from there. Your serial number will still work.

Have you tried Win95/98/2000 emulation?

And does the Steam version require constant validation?

Yea, i actually have both versions, but here is my full problem.

I want to play LAN with my brother. His machine has Win98SE. Steam will not run on it, so he cannot get the version i have on my computer (whatever version comes with steam). When i try to connect to his computer (him playing the original copy of the game) through my new version of the game, we cannot see each other in multiplayer.

However, if i install the original HL from the original disc (from when the game was released), i can navigate all menus, and get into "Multiplayer > LAN". Since we both have the same version, i can see his game. However, i cannot join it, because since i am using WinXP, HalfLife cannot go "ingame".

Any ideas?

HalfLife cannot go "ingame"

Wait, have you tried playing the game on your own without connecting to his game? HalfLife has a serial, and you can bet your tight ass that it's comparing serials across the network.

Disconnect your XP box (just to be certain), and see if you can play a normal single-player game of HL.

Yes i did. I'm sorry for the confusion that the term "ingame" creates. HL1 cannot get ANYWHERE into the actual game, single player or multi. It cannot even run the training area (hazard course).

At this point i'm just wondering if there is some solution that will let me see a multiplayer game created with his older version of the game, using my newer. Is there some sort of tunneling app or something i can use?

Have you tried software rendering mode?

HL's rendering was probably the last of the great software renderers. It was an impressive hunk of junk, I must admit.

Yes. Thanks for all of your replies.

I eventually got this game to run by downgrading to an older version of the game, through the patches availible on Sierra's site. I have no idea why i needed to go DOWN versions, but whatever.

Once i could get the original copy running on my machine, i was able to connect to his no problem. We had fun fragging each other.

Thanks.

Sometimes patches introduce new problems while fixing the old. Lately Half Life 2 has had a weird graphical glitch for me that never existed on earlier versions, where you see a translucent white box around any damage decals you put on wooden objects with bullets or the crowbar (not a major enough glitch for me to arse around for hours trying to fix it though).

Don't change these.
