DVD Rip programs

Hey guys well basicly i just got a new computer with a dvd burner (finaly) and am looking for some recomindations on dvd decription programs (i think thats what they are referd to as) that alow me to rip dvds videos to my computer that are protected i guess. as well as software that would alow me to edit video files once they are ripped to my computer are there any suggestions for certain programs and if they exist programs that do both?
