Flash + Offline Database

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-10 0:50

I'm not sure where to post this, it's not really programming but it's not a real computer support question.

I need to make a multimedia cd that consists of reference guides for animals/plants. The layout would be the same for all the pages, and there would be at least 50 of them.

I was thinking of making a flash based app, but the thought of making each page individually really scares me. In an ideal world, I would just make the layout, point it to a file that acts as a database and make it work, but I'm not sure how to make something like that.

Any suggestion?

Flash is crimethink, and it doesn't have any facility to access databases, so you'd have to have some sort of backend anyway. So just do yourself a favor and write the whole thing in Python, Perl, Java, or C/C++.

Your idea sounds a lot like a Wiki. Could you just use MediaWiki or another Wiki and have it access the disk's database?

No Flash

Try PHP* or Python.

(*: When done right. The fact there are terrible PHP "coders" around who make pages by inserting <? ... ?> randomly doesn't mean it can't be pretty fine for a DB driven web applications if used correctly by somebody who could have done it just as well in another language. PHP's advantages are simplicity and syntax.)

The problem is, it's not a web application, but an exe. Just insert the CD in an offline computer and magic, it works. :(

Hay, did you know that your browser can access files stored on your hard disk as well as on the internets?

Yeah but the ones in your local system are not dynamic unless you're running an application server.

And the CD would depend of the browser installed in the computer.
I wouldn't dismiss having to prepare it to accept IE5 and Netscape 4. And then, it wouldn't be 'pretty' as it's required.

Hi, year 2000 is here! Now you should only bother to support Firefox, and if you're feeling *specially* nice, you can even see if you can make it not suck on that MSIE6 piece of shit.

Oh, I forgot to add:
Opera, Konqueror and Safari: These good browsers are automatically supported because you support Firefox, and all four are standards compilant.

MSIE6: Like I said you can even support this shit, but don't really bother, it's ok if you don't.
