CPU temps too high even

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-09 18:55

I had been having what I thought were heat related problems (random shut-downs and restarts) becuase I thought the CPU was getting to hot with my shitty 5 dollar heatsink/fan.  It was idling at around 47 and would get up to around 65 and then crash.  Well I bought a brand new heatsink/fan with 6 heatpipes and a 120mm fan on top (this thing is massive) for 65 bucks, as well as some artic cooler 5.  I had hoped that it would lower my CPU temp, but alas after installing the damn thing my CPU temps are compleatly unchanged.  What is going on.  Please help if you can.

1st what kind of processor do you have

2nd have you ever installed a Heatsink/fan combo before

3rd I dont think you really needed a 120mm fan with 6! heat pipes.

and I hope you didnt put to much artic silver 5.

1. XP 2600+
2. Many Times.
3. Well I thought overkill would be what I would need to bring the temps down but it didn't.
4. About half a grain of rice.

improper thermal paste application?

Sounds like either the heatsink and processor aren't cozy enough (could be due to poorly applied thermal paste, as 4 said), or the airflow in your case is restricted somehow.

4) Too much. Apply a thin film on the heat sinks base only. Thin means you can hardly see it. Also clean the heat sink and the CPU with alcohol first (careful with the alc on the CPU, though...)

5) Check the heat sinks mounting. With a monster like that if the mounting isn't perfect it won't make good contact with the CPU.

6) As #5 already said: The best heat sink can't do nothing if your case is not well ventilated. After all, the heat sink has to give off the heat somewhere. And that somewhere is the air in the case. Buy some fans for the case.

You didn't consider that your thermal probes are inaccurate? What are you using exactly to read your temps?

update ya bios or at least try restore default settings and watch the temps again
