Okay guys, i nedd help. I found (legally) an old I-book. 64 MB ram. it came with a slow as hell "Yellow Dog" OS. i'm now trying to install mac os 9, but when i boot it from the cd (pressing c) and all that i can see is the image of a floppy disk with a question mark. What's my problem?

WTF would you want mac os when you have a perfectly good Linux already installed.

You should've asked me four years ago, when I could still remember how to fix a pre-X system. Try holding both C and D.

That should help.
In short, zap the PRAM by holding CMD-OPT-P-R during boot up.
Then hold Command-Shift-Option-Delete.
If that doesn't work, we'll have to get more drastic.

thanks for the info, guys... i'll try it and tell you how things are turning out. Stay tuned for more updates!

did what 8 suggested... but the only things it does is to show a folder with the mac os symbol and a question mark... let's use some more drastic methods?

Ah, it can't find the boot volume.  Not sure what to do.  I'll look around and see what I can find out.
Expect hearing from me later.

Nethack, but it needs a real keypad.

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-02 16:46

In the absense of a keypad you can use the vi-style keys.

uh... i can't really dig nethack... is there a way to play SLASH'EM on a mac os 9?

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-04 6:27

>>20
Slashem is just a variant of nethack. But I doubt you can play it on a crippled OS like OS9. Damn thing doesn't even come with a console, how the hell are you meant to compile things?

Oh I did find a version of Zork that worked with OS8/9 back when I was working at a company that didn't believe in upgrading (and when they finally did upgrade, they got a bunch of expensive Windows Terminal Servers and those awful Winterms. They put the servers on the other side of the country and had them serve 13 offices spread across the country. They were too incompetant to secure them in any meaningful way, so when I helpfully installed Firefox they promptly fired me for "hacking".)

Anyway Zork rules.

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-04 7:46

oh, and can i use pkzip on it? if not, what archiver can i use?

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-04 8:14

Yes, you can play Diablo on it. I do hope you don't intend to do it using the trackpad, though. As for random software, check here

found a .toast image of diablo... how do i burned it?

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-04 13:41

I guess you'd burn a .toast image with (a pirated copy of) Roxio Toast, right?

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-05 13:55

no-no... just found out you can rename toast files to iso files!
