IS there any FREE way to recover a file once it'w been overwritten?

isn't there usually a bookmarks.bak file in the same folder?
try and rename it to bookmarks.html.

get the "Bookmark Backup" extension, backups your whole firefox configuration everytime you shutdown firefox.

the bookmarks.baK FILE WAS OVERWRITTEN TOO =(

Then look for the bookmarks.bak.bak! If that was overwritten then your only hope will be bookmarks.bak.bak.bak. If that fails, you're screwed.
