wtf wtf hard drive

Name: Anonymous 2006-01-05 0:07

Hey dudes, I recently bought a 300gb maxtor drive and put it in my chassis and hooked up the IDE cables and PSU and shit.

Anyway, when I go to actually *install* the thing (with the software provided), I get a warning telling my that WinXP doesn't support hard drives over 137GB. That's okay, I guess, I thought I could partition the drive into three seperate 100GB drives.

But I can't. For some reason, I can only make one 137GB partition, pretty much wasting the other 173GB.

I'm not too worried though, the drive only cost me 80 dollars (brand new, it was some after-holiday sale at CompUSA).

But I would like to use the drive! Any suggestions as to how to overcome this 137GB limitation? I'm running a copy of WinXP SP1, so I really can't update (and I haven't had any luck with finding an ISO of SP2) anything.

Toss Anonymous a bone, /comp/! Help me out!

Go to Google and download the SP2 patch.  It's better than nothing.

they are using uncompatible hdds.

When solving HDD problems, the first site to go (even before 4chan) is the manufacturer. Really. They know their problems. Every hard drive is uncompatible with some mainboard/os. Lots of customers complain. They have utils. Or how-tos. Or just faqs. But anyway, it is always more efficient than googling.

There are torrents of both sp2 and a crack that lets you use windows update. Both are super easy to find.

Maybe theres a crack that lets you change your serial number before you install sp2, maybe there isn't. It would be damn useful in a situation like this. *Zips mouth shut*

There is an official way, documented by Microsoft, of changing a volume license key without reinstalling. It's meant to be used if a genuine VLK gets leaked and subsequently blacklisted, so the genuine owner of the blacklisted key can be issued a new one and update it on their machines without having to reinstall. Of course, that only applies to the corporate edition.
