Is there free DVD writing software anywhere out there? The Nero software I use turns my 4.7 GB DVDs into 4.35 GB and it's really pissing me off.

physically DVD is 4.35GB. not 4.7GB as the manufacturer claims.

The old "marketing bytes" phenomenon. 1GB to the operating system (in most cases) is 2^30 bytes (1,073,741,824 bytes). 1GB to the marketing guys is 10^9 bytes (1,000,000,000 bytes). Means the manufacturer can put a bigger number on the box.

4.35 * 1024^3 / 1000^3 = ~4.67
Since they're already rounding it more than that, why not go all the way and say 5GB?

Because that would be bad. Also, you have overheads (like session data), which account for that 'missing' 0.03GB.
