Stuttering problems in gaming

Quake 4, how I love thee, and yet how I loathe thee.

I love this game so much...however. I have an irritating stuttering problem. No matter what setting the graphics are at, even the lowest, the game uses virtual memory, therefore making it stutter every second or so.

I have a 6800 with 128mb of ram, and 1 gig of DDR ram running in dual channel. I know my graphics card has low ram, but shouldn't my gig make up for it?

It is just the demo. Perhaps it's a demo problem?

I don't understand... I've even tried turning off the page file, but windows forcibly creates one! GRAH.

In my motherboard's BIOS, I set the AGP aperture size to 128 megs when I first set it up, should I take it back down to 64 megs?

This card handles everything I throw at it with no stuttering problems, ever. Just quake 4. Help!

Also, should I enable or disable AGP fastwrites? Thanks =)

is quake 4 compressed like doom 3? decompressing the data files was supposed to alleviate a lot of FPS issues in d3.

Thanks for the suggestion, they probably are. I'll try that. Though, the framerate is awesome when it doesn't stutter ^^

Well nevermind. As far as I can tell in the demo they're not compressed, they're part of the pk4 files. Or am I an idiot and they're compressed in there?

believe they are. right click > open with winrar.

I had this problem with all games. Turned out to be my soundcard. I was profoundly surprised.

Close any torrent program you have running or other such programs that aren't neccesary and then try running it. Sometimes torrent programs and some other garbage like firewalls can make game stutter every now and then, I figure you might have that kind of a problem cuz as you say, your frame rate normally is good.

Don't change these.
