so Ive been trying to get a new IP address through the dos promt thing, like here>start menu>run/typed command>dos> IPconfig /renew and if that doesnt work IPconfig /release, but then I type in IPconfig /renew again but I have the same IP address. I'm not sure how to get a new one, other than typing in IPconfig /renew but that gets me the same IP address again. so could you guys help if you know how.

what those commands do is the same as what "repair" under your LAN properties does. there's no reason to be using them.
If you want a new IP, that's not the way to get it. Unplug your cable modem overnight. If that doesn't work then your ISP has given you a static IP.

Renewing IP under "DOS" is better because you can cancel it by closing the window, sure the repair dialog has a cancel button, but clicking it doesn't do anything. It still has to finish what it's doing before it actually closes.

If you don't even know what a static IP address is, what are you doing dicking around with command line TCP/IP utilities?
