Removing partition tables on SD cards...

Ok I've got an SD card but I want to remove the partition table so the card just allows for raw sata to be stored. The standard XP format doesn't let you do this but Fdisk does. The trouble is my card reader is USB so I can't use it outside of windows.

Anyone know of an fdisk like utility which can do this to SD cards and run under windows?

Try learning a bit about computers first. Any storage device needs a file system. Otherwise, there's no way to tell which bits are which. The very purpose of a file system is to organize data into files and directories, which allows you to address individual pieces of data.

you learn about storage first. You can create a FAT32 formatted storage device without a partition table. Afterall you should never need to have more than one partition on low capacity removable storage anyway.

I have been wondering about this lately.  I have a MMC card with boot sector in the zeroth (the first) sector on the card.  It sure doesn't seem to have a partition table.  Normally I find the partition table on the first physical sector of the card.  My larger SD card has a partition table in the first sector - that points to the boot sector elsewhere.  Both are readable by WinXP.  Where would the partition table be if the boot sector is on the first sector of the card?

The first block on a device contains the Master Boot Record, which  not only contains the code necessary for booting the device, but also the partition table for the primary partition.

I agree with you - this is the typical configuration.  What I am confussed about is an MMC card I have that does not seem to contain a MBR but has the primary partition boot sector starting on the very first sector???  BTW: I know that reading the first sector can be hard.  I do it with a C program I wrote that runs in PIC hardware.  It is part of an MP3 project.  This strange MMC card IS readable by my PC also.

Figured it out.  The MMC card with no MBR was formatted as "superfloppy" format.  No MBR, no partitions.
