"Hal.dll missing" SATA+IDE

Name: Anonymous 2005-11-30 20:04

I installed windows xp pro to my 320gb SATA drive and everything was going fine, until I tried to install my IDE storage drive (has backed up files)
Whenever I plug the IDE drive in I get "Hal.dll missing on bootup" with any jumper configuration.
I remove the drive windows is fine.

If I change which head of the cable the IDE drive is on, windows boots up but the IDE drive is invisible/not detected.
Do I have to install windows with both drives connected?
Or is there some process to adding the IDE drive with my SATA, because anything inside the windows install regarding repair is very difficult to access when dealing with an SATA drive.

It might be booting from the SATA drive initially, then trying to load the rest of Windows from the other drive.  I'm not sure about how Windows loads past ntldr, but Hal.dll might be the first thing loaded.

Someone suggested "Check to make sure the bios ignores the IDE in every instance" and apparently I did not notice the Secondary Slave setting of "Auto" I set it to "None" and it now works.
Apparently SATA to IDE performance is a little funky, so kinda slow for give and take of files, maybe that's just for me.

But the only other problem I'm having is that my motherboard won't recognize the extra 1gb stick of ram I installed (along with 512x2) my board says it supports a maximum of 3gb and these are the same type of ram, just one is a different capacity.
This asus might just be picky about mix and match I guess.

Defective ram, returning it to newegg.

Don't change these.
