Removing ZoneAlarm

Name: Anonymous 2005-11-20 0:24

While removing ZoneAlarm Firewall a while back I hit a really stange problem. When I attempted to uninstall the process only got as far as shutting down the "TrueVector Internet Monitor" before my whole system rebooted. I figured this was just part of the process, but when I got to my desktop ZoneAlarm was still running (with the TrueVector). Everytime I tried to remove this firewall I hit the same problem.

I contacted ZoneAlarm's tech support, no awnsers. I tried google next, found a few articles on removing ZoneAlarm and TVIM manually. This was a huge mistake. I follow the directions to the letter, removing all the registry files and everything, but maybe one or two wouldn't delete due to an error. Ok I figured, out of the lot I did delete these few wouldn't make the difference. I soon discovered I couldn't access the internet at all now. Super.

I system restore, but I was still stuck with a program I didn't want and was obstructing my connection (I was removing it because it was seriously slowing down my connection even when it was properly configured).

Why would my whole system reboot when trying to remove this annoying program? I never experienced this uninstalling any program, so was it just ZoneAlarm or was it my hardware? If it's just ZoneAlarm, let my post serve as warning to those wanting to use it as your Firewall.

The old versions had very bad uninstall issues. I haven't experienced any with version 6.

What happened to you was that it couldn't uninstall the firewall driver. ZoneAlarm embeds itself deep into the system and has a lot of trouble pulling out I suppose.

Do you do registry cleaning? That may have destroyed the uninstall instructions.

The version I initially installed was ZoneAlarm Pro 5.0.590.043. Not sure if it was the most up-to-date but it was the only one being offered on the bigger torrent sites.

I suppose I might of deleted those, but it doesn't sound like something i'd do. I don't fiddle around unless I, or atleast someone else, knows what their doing.

I've developed a cautionary attitude to firewalls now, protecting yourself from dangerous things shouldn't mean you need to keep dangerous things. I figure i'll just use common sense and not download anything stupid and do without.
