Non-shitty modems

sup world4ch crew?

My computer has an annoying habit of "dropping" its internet connection whenever i'm using multiple download protocols. It usually happens when i've 3 or 4 torrents running at full speed, and like, an FTP client or USENET open too. It only happens when i'm running multiple protocols (though i do that pretty much all the time :\)

Without any warning, and in no pattern, the machine will lose it's connection to the internet. I'll get the speech bubble saying "LAN connection is unplugged" or whatever, so i go into Network Settings, and lo and behold, my LAN connection is disabled, and i am unable to re-enable it.

When i asked my friend about this, he said:
"The modems that we get nowadays are not terribly well designed with respect to their NAT protocols and quite frankly, thier routing is shit. When you have the system running large amounts of bandwidth through multiple ports and mappings, its quite possible that a race condition can come into effect. This probably causes a hard lock of the modem and sends junk data to your network card in the resulting crash, probably resulting in a crash of your network card as well.

I know a lot of routers have the same problem, since they are SOHO items, they are not designed to deal with the millions of connections you have going. You see it as 2 bittorrents running. It sees it as 800 or so connections AT ONCE. This causes death in SOHO grade items :P"

So then the only solution is for me to buy a new, and better modem. But my question is this...what the fuck should i buy? The only brands i know are like Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, and other shitty companies, who would just have the same problem. Who makes decent modems? (no, i don't mean routers. i don't have a router, as i only have one computer).

thanks.

What kind of modem do you need? Cable, oldschool or ADSL terminator? Linksys is a Cisco subdivision, they're probably the best you're going to get off the shelf. I've never had much drama running five PCs and an Xbox through my Motorola Sufferboard either.
