Let me begin by saying I OWN THIS COPY OF WINDOWS. I OWN IT I OWN IT I OWN IT. I'm installing it on a new computer because the Athlon on my old computer died when the cooling unit went out.
Seeing as the copy is legal, I'd like it activated. Its installed and whatnot, I just need it activated.
I cannot boot in safe mode. Long story, hardware related, no I can't fix it.
Its in English and uses Service Pack 1.

It is only illegal when you install it with an illegal cdkey.

I got hung up on twice and fucking wasted 2 hours on that, personally.
My opinion? Download a torrent off piratebay of xp pro with sp2 slipstreamed into a corporate key. problem solved.

I don't know where this idea has come from that you can't do a clean install of Windows XP once it's been activated once. You can reactivate Windows after completely reinstalling it. I think they start asking questions if you do it more than once in 90 days or so, but even then I've reactivated one copy (on a totally borked-up laptop where the preinstalled factory image turned out to be flawed, so after activating it and finding the problem still present, I had to install and activate again from a regular Windows CD - had to speak to a service rep to explain the situation, but they still activated it without any further hesitation).

On activation it "binds" itself to your hardware. If you attempt to install it on different hardware, when you try to activate it it'll go "omg u r pirate!"

I used Microsoft's activation hotline once. I changed enough hardware in my computer to trip activation, so I had to phone in. It took a while (20 minutes total, I think), but all went well.

I never had any trouble with the activation when I had to reformat 4 times in a single day. Weirdly enough, after the second time I called I never had to call again to get it reactivated again even though I reformated twice more.
