Hey guys. Currently I have a GeForce2 MX200 32MB. Is it worth switching it to a GeForce FX5200 128MB? I'm interested in that one because it's among the cheapest boards nowadays, yet it's a GeForce, 128MB VRAM and DirectX 9.0 compliant. What do you think?
It's better than what you have. I'm impressed, your hardware's older than mine. Are you sure your aging mobo can handle the new card?

Not worth it at all. Any geforce 3 or 4 outperforms a FX5200 (gf4 greatly outperforming) and can be found on ebay for $20 usd. If you get with a 64bit FX5200 128mb, it's basicially like upgrading your geforce 2 mx200 to a geforce 2 mx400.

Yes, actually just my video card is that old. The rest is relatively OK.

Oh, really? Are you sure? It can't be that bad... The FX series was released at least 3 years later than the MX versions, how come the FX ones could be so lame? I mean, I imagined that, considering the price, they shouldn't be top level, but not sucking that much. Wow, now I don't really know what to do. But thanks for the tip.

It's just the 5200 that sucks so bad. The only thing you'll get running it over the older cards, is that it supports newer fancy features, but it does run slower.

The GeForce FX5200 was the first GeForce 5 series card to be released. On that note, it was the most abhorrid. Just because it was the first, doesn't mean it's the best. Just look at the Williamette Pentium 4s.
The first worth it card in the 5xxx line is the GeForce FX5700 or higher.

No. Don't do it. I had that card and it sucks for newer games (Doom3, Half-Life 2, F.E.A.R., Battlefield 2), especially in the FPS department. If you can go for a Geforce 6600 256 MB card. I found one for under $100. This card rocks.

It's not worth it. Though the 5200 has 128MB, the memory bandwith is much too small to make use of it. Even if it's 9.0 compliant, it's not able to make use of 9.0... Because of very low shaders... A GeForce 3 Ti500 will be slightly faster and better.
I had both cards in comparison.

You must be a Lunix user. Lunix don't get the fun stuff, so you don't need anything special. In fact even an old IBM VGA ISA card will work, all you need is text mode lol.
