Editing - Music

Over the years i've heard alot of music that are flat out RUINED by lyrics.

Is their anyway to edit music via the computer to leave out/get rid of lyrics? Is it even possible, or those kind of things are only possible when the music was originally edited?

I must admit, i'm not savy on computer tech so if this question seems rediculous just ignore it.

That said, there are vocal removal plugins for Winamp and XMMS that do a decent job of mixing down the vocals on most songs (you obviously can't remove them completely, but you can get it so the background music takes enough precedence to sing over). My current favorite is DeFX: http://defx.sf.net

A very simple DSP effect (hint: Nullsoft Digital Signal Processing Studio plugin for Winamp) will do the trick, although you should keep in mind the following:

● It will only work on stereo music
● It will make your music mono
● It will remove instruments that sound in the center too
● It will not remove voices that don't sound in the center
● OGG, MP3, AAC and WMA files use lossy compression, and because of this, and regardless of the way it's done, you'll still hear part of the voice; in particular, the highest frequencies. So it works better on CD Audio.
