Any reason for no PCI-E? Is AGP better or what?

The only two advantages of PCI Express:
1. Bandwidth, which you don't need as AGP8X is far from exhaust.
2. SLI, which you don't want to do as it's a waste of money and a bad idea for an upgrade (in the future, you'll want an all-new video card with better effects and features, not just more raw power).
This leaves us with a total of 0 reasons why PCI-E is worth having. Since it's more expensive, and the cards using it are more expensive, it's not advisable.

Hardly a rational argument. I'd only go for AGP if I couldn't afford PCI-E. SLI isn't a waste of money - I get almost double graphics performance from it - I can't buy a single card which will come anywhere near that performance. It also means that if you're a bit strapped for casxh now, you just put one card in and get a second later.

Wrong. >>8
Right, but you forget that PCI-E is the new "industry standard" meaning it's harder to get newer graphics cards and motherboards that support AGP.

Why do you want that. Don't tell me you're using two 6600s, or something like that, instead of a single 6800, or something like that. The fact you can afford a bad choice doesn't make it a good choice.

Certainly. If they didn't force people to use PCI-E, it would have been another waste of money on engineering, like RAMBUS was, so in order to make people pay for it, they're making it "industry standard" and dropping a perfectly functional, cost-effective bus. That's why I'm forced to upgrade my processor, mobo and RAM today; I can't risk waiting any longer and I'm not throwing my 6800 away.

Most computers nowadays have a PSU, CPU, motherboard, some RAM, a video chipset, and a hard drive, maybe even a CD-ROM drive.

So, I'm going to be building a new gaming comp, and i'm about to be buying parts.....so whats the verdict? PCI-E or AGP?
>>13
decent boards can be found that have both, and are socket 939 as well. if you really can't decide, or want to take advantage of some of the better AGP stuff as it drops in prices because of PCI-E it would be a good idea, and when that card becomes too dated you don't have to replace your mb to go to PCI-E. tomshardware just did a $500 gaming rig article, go look it up
