New video card.

Just a couple of questions regarding graphics cards.

1. I currently have a geforce 4200ti 64MB, is it worth upgrading to something like a 6600gt 256MB, and how big would the performance increase be for recent games, would it be like night and day or just a small bump?

2. You may already have gathered that I have an agp slot, how big is the difference in performance between the agp and pcie versions of the 6600gt? If the difference is huge I might hold off upgrading until I get a new motherboard.

I would say if your going to get a new motherboard soon then wait. AGP is dead, so any card you buy now will be worthless when you get a new motherboard.

I made the exact same change, except with a 128MB gf4200.

Really not that big of a difference. I know this from personal use. Sure, I can set my CS:S models to high instead of medium, but I don't even see any difference. It's really not worth the money unless you're also getting more RAM and a faster CPU.

Just one guy's opinion. You won't see an increase in performance, only some shiny new graphical features that make zero difference in the games. In fact, the performance may go down BECAUSE of those features, so consider that too. The GF4200 still has some life in it, I'd wait a few months until the 7000 line causes price drops. After all, you can still play all the games you want to play at decent settings, unless they made it incompatible with DX8 cards.
