Missing space

Name: Anonymous 2005-10-28 20:33

On my computer it claims roughly 40GB of space is taken up but I can't see where. I've searched through folders with Windows and Program files making up around 6GB together.
I can't understand what's taking up this extra space, are there any measures I can take to at least find out what's clogging it up?

Knoppix = your friend.

There is a tool that I use all the time, it's called OverDisk. It's a neat little program that indexes exactly how much space is being taken up by folders and files on your PC.

here is a screenshot of it in action on my own pc --> http://img474.imageshack.us/img474/3026/overdisk9fp.png

Clicking on any one of those folders will cause the view to enlarge. I use it all the time to see what is taking up the most space on my PC and can analyze what needs to be deleted or archived or saved or whatever.

But is it free or what?

I'm sorry, guyz. >>4 is my little brother, and I'd like to apologize for his complete stupidity. I mean, I always tell him to use google, but he never does. And just yesterday I caught him buttfucking our pooch.

Anyway, so sorry...

SpaceMonger is good for that, too.

Spacemongler?

"I'll suck up your hard drive space!"

http://www.win.tue.nl/sequoiaview/ is also good. The cushion treemaps look better than spacemonger's plain treemaps. Sequoia View is also free.

Make sure you get the XP version if you are on XP. The non-XP version crashes a bit on XP.

The best program of this type I've come across is kdirstat (http://kdirstat.sourceforge.net/) for Linux. It is a shame that there isn't a windows version.

FAR Manager, Ctrl+Q will make the opposite panel to show files and count folders, files, space, and slack recursively on a folder you're over. F3 on a folder will also calculate its space and show it in the ministatus.

could it be system restore files? they are usually hidden and take up a load of space.

I used Overdisk to find a load of old files clogging up my system, there's less than 20GB taken up now.
Thanks.

Don't change these.
