I would really like to turn the spin speed from 7400 to 5400 because i've heard 7400 blows out fast :/

IIRC you can't just make the hard drive platters spin faster or slower, as the firmware and hardware are timed and tuned to that speed.

Drive failures are caused by too many starts and stops. The motors won't wear out from spinning.

In 6-10 years it's so hopelessly small you don't want to use a bus slot on it anyways. However, drives may last as little as 2 years if they operate too hot.
Anyways, it's not the drive's cost what bothers. $120? Meh. The data most of us have on our drives is worth $1200 or more.
