A demo is a demo, just a predefined animation sequence with comparitively little going on behind the scenes. Let's wait 'til we see something that good-looking with the AI, physics and other gameplay-associated calculations running as well. I reckon a top flight PC could still manage visuals like that - there just aren't any games that look like that yet because game developers aren't (generally) stupid enough to make titles that will only run acceptably on the most cutting-edge PCs. And by the time the PS3 is out, PCs will have moved on further.

Consoles get to have the luxury of being heavily optimized, since per se all PS3s are going to have identical hardware. On the other hand, PC games are tailored so they can play at least moderately on a modern mid-range PC.
Chances are, what a console can do, a modern system can do.

what a console can do, a modern system can do.
What the man says.
Generally, a mid-range computer is just as capable as any gaming console on the market, with three differences: it can do more, has higher resolution, and costs a lot more.
People don't buy consoles for the tech. They buy them for the games.

an Xbox will never push the number of triangles my PC can. The Xbox 360 might beat it out. I dunno. We'll see.
You'll never get good graphics out of a normal cathode TV I can tell you that much. Unless your system is on an HDTV, it won't matter if it's an NES or a PS3, the PC will look better. Your console can render all the megapixels in the world and if the display can't keep up you'll never see them

While PCs have the raw power to, their less optimized architecture and no standard hardware makes it harder to happen. Bit that's not the biggest deal. The problem is games themselves. All you get for PC, save for a few honorable exceptions, is Doom clone number 14693 "cant-see-shit edition", and Boring American Game™. Almost all Japanese developers, almost all great developers, almost all great sagas, and most games worth playing are available for consoles. I haven't found Shenmue, Xenosaga, Zelda games, etc. for PC.
Finally, explain why any new console has better looking games, and why even when a few of these games are ported, the PC version sometimes sucks and often requires a far more powerful computer to run properly.
Wow. Someone who doesn't find Xenosaga to be a boring train ride with mediocre gameplay?

all great sagas... Shenmue, Xenosaga, Zelda...
lol

By that logic macs should be gaming beasts.
Then again a lot of consoles do seem to use ppc chips.

use ppc chips.
The next gen of gaming consoles don't have a lot of nicities current CPUs (mainly those used in PC and higher) have. I think their "power" will be purely theoretical.
Hey, look, I can make it run gazillion triangles a second for this completely fake scene! Now how the hell will I get even 1/4 that performance for this real-world code?!
