Dual Core Dual Proc?

Name: One More Thing 2005-10-14 4:19

That's what the next PowerMac will be, likely before the end of the year.  Two G5 Dual cores.  This is serious horsepower in a box.
Question:
Besides the obvious like open photoshop faster or render in FC HD faster while in an iChat teleconference with 20 people, 19 of whom you dispise, what else could you do with a beastie like this?
Any OS.  *nix ideas very welcome.

(FYI: dual core processors for PCs have been around for some time, and now you have the AMD Athlon X2 Toledo to kick ass.)

You could run servers, archive with powerful/CPU-intensive archivers (RAR, 7-Zip) faster, edit huge images faster (Photoshop, PSP), comes in handy for anything related to CG and CAD, and of course, you might be interested on next-gen PC(/Mac? probably) games.

Or you could run a couple instances of SETI@Home :P .

It's "in the pipe" but when exactly when only Steve knows.
Look at the new iMac upgrade.  PCI-e, DDR2 RAM (at last), and that's the consumer line.  The pro shit is still Apples core gravy-train in computing, and they're the ones that make the switch to Intel last.  About 2007 IIRC.  IBM has dual core G5s ready to ship and Apple's still got comittments there.

Don't change these.
