degauss?

Name: Anonymous 2005-10-09 6:08

When i degauss my monitor on the left, the second one goes weird, i know this is normal cuz it does something with magnets, (from what i know realligns something) what exactly does it do? and why does it affect the other one?

Surrounding the tube is a coil of wire which is energised when the monitor is first switched on, or when manually degaussed from the monitor's menu. This produces an alternating electromagnetic field, neutralising any residual magnetism in the tube's shadow mask or aperture grille which would otherwise distort the colour and geometry of the picture. Because this electromagnetic field passes outside the case as well as through the tube, anything in the vicinity can be affected by it too, including other CRTs, floppy disks, etc.

what about HDs Mobos and other stuff

i dont think the field is nearly strong enough to affect HD's

Indeed no. Hard disks are generally further away than one monitor standing right next to another, and are also shielded inside a steel case, and the drive enclosure as well. A floppy disk might be at some risk if it were sitting right on top of the monitor, but I've yet to see a floppy lose data because of being left too close to a monitor.

Floppies are so unreliable anyway that there's no way to tell.

Floppy disks lose data when you look at them wrong, heh.
