Often when I have DivX AVI files in a folder open in Explorer, it will crash, & I end up having to reboot completely. (This sometimes happens with XVid files, too.) It only seems to happen, however, when the thumbnail view is selected. And it not only happens in explorer, but in the file open dialog box as well (e.g. when I try to open the video by doing File -> Open... in Media Player.) I've tried the following already:
1. Installed latest version of DivX & XVid.
2. Windows (XP Home) is all up to date.
It would be simple enough to just turn off the thumbnails. However, Windows seems to want to show them all the time. Even going to a folder without thumbnails & doing the Make All Folders Like This One thing doesn't always work. For example, when I put an SD card into it's reader slot, it will show up as a new drive, and automatically display with thumbnails if there are videos on it (& then promptly crash before I have a chance to select a different view. The same happens when I put a CD-ROM in. And the Open dialog always displays thumbnails (&, again, crashes before I have a chance to change it).
So, ideally, I'd like to fix the problem all together. But I'd settle for a way to make Windows never display thumbnails ANYWHERE.
