PSU replacement

Name: Anonymous 2005-09-29 2:21

I have a Dell Dimension 4100 and i'd like to know if I can replace the PSU with a Antec SmartPower SL300S(300 watt).

http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=25300

Can I just swap out the PSU or do I have to get one that doesn't have the power switch in the back like the stock one?

Answer's yes but if you plan to fill all your drive bays and go with dual graphics cards later on, 300W isn't going to cut it.  The switch on the back is fine; it's just the I/O current switch and its placement doesn't really matter as long as you can get to it when you need to do upgrades and such.

Thanks for the reply. I just want to replace the stock PSU with something that doesn't make so much noise.

err, if your going for quiet, antec probably isnt the way to go. only there truepower series is really all that quiet, after the smartpowers get more than half way loaded down they get _loud_, worse than the standard dells probably(only ever heard a pentium 3 loud dell psu, but it was quieter than a smartpower)

^get a seasonic 80+ or s12 300/330w, things are so damn quiet you have to look to make sure the fans running

I thought Dell used reversed polarity motherboards, or is that a bygone "feature?"  Or did Dell even do that?

Yes, they did do it, no, they don't do it any more.

Don't change these.
