WOnder if anyone can suggest what could be the root of this problem I have with my laptop.
Its an old 2003 Compaq Evo N600c. Recently it gave me error upon boot up, "1782-Disk Controller Failure". Basically the laptop started to not recognise the hard drive. So I booted up to a Linux live CD. Even in Linux it couldn't find the hard drive. So later I wanted to try to diagnose if its the hard drive itself that is dying or the actual controller that recognises the hard drive.
Now here is the weird part. Few days later it suddenly boots up ok. FIne life went on. Then few days after same problem. Went out and came back, problem came back again. So basically the problem comes back on and off for no reason that I cant pinpoint yet.
My initial reaction was heat. But then why sometimes I leave it OFF few days or a few hours it gets fixed? Could it be dust? But it is definitely enviromental outside the laptop thats what I am pretty sure of. Any thoughts?
