Forced overscan on nVidia TV-Out

Name: Coxswain 2005-09-10 15:59

I just upgraded to an nVidia 6600 GT from an ATi 9600 Pro. It works great for games, but for some retarded reason whenever I fullscreen video on my television set, it automatically causes about an inch of overscan, making it really quite difficult to read subtitles and the like.

I've adjusted the display in the driver options so that the desktop looks correct, but as soon as I fullscreen video the stupid overscanning kicks in.

Is there any way to turn off this "feature"? ATi's options were nice and simple - the screen would stay how you adjusted it and you could turn on overscan manually if you ever wanted it for whatever crazy reason.

Correct image and how it looks like on my TV:

GET TVTOOL

I tried TVTool, and it doesn't work.  All the boxes are greyed out and it says that the options are unavailable because nVidia doesn't disclose how they encode their TV signal or some such nonsense.

Overscan is technically how composite/s-video is sent to you TV.  There's a certain range of edge space that is cut off, and those who produce digital video are aware of this.

Anyway, it should be in the nVidia tab in Advanced settings for your display panel somewhere.

For normal signals, I've actually gotten rid of all of the overscan by adjusting my TV's screen geometry using the service menu, so stuff like HUD elements or life bars aren't cut off in console games.  I don't see why the automatic overscan is even necessary; on your average non-modified TV you're going to have a bit of overscan, so why should the video card add even MORE overscan?

I've been searching up and down the driver options for an option to turn it off, but I can't find anything.  The closest I get is the advanced timing menu, but any modification there are again thrown out the window as soon as I fullscreen something.

Don't change these.
