I have an infuriating problem I've never been able to fix. Using SuSE 9.0 Enterprise and 9.2 Professional in reasonably standard setups, GTK applications bite. Not only they are slow (we all know GTK is lethargic compared to Win32), but there seems to be some kind of bug, race condition, or something, that hangs applications for a few seconds, especially when there are many input boxes.
For example, in either Mozilla or Firefox, with either TrueType or shitty fonts, you go to Advanced Search, and click the different input boxes. Well, sometimes, the cursor won't show up immediately, and the entire application will hang (and not redraw or do anything in any of its windows) for a few seconds. This seems to happen more or less at random, but it gets worse the more hours I've been using the computer. Besides this, Mozilla and especially Firefox glitch and close frequently (what's most fun is the Firefox bug reporting application also glitches with some key combinations so I usually break it before I get to write what's going on). Other GTK applications are the same, although QT doesn't show this problem.
On top of that, X, GTK, or some part of it seems to be ridiculously slow; I know it's slower than Windows, but using Mozilla or Firefox, try goint to http://www.maxdev.com/ . The JS text scroller there absolutely kills either in a Pentium !!!/733 MHz, making the whole Mozilla and even the rest of the system hardly usable, while it works absolutely fine and smoothly in a Pentium ][/400 MHz running Windows and the same browser.
Any help on this? Thanks in advance.
