Computer crash

    So my computer just crashed out from windows, screwing files needed to start it. Luckily, i have a Linux partition..

    I had some important files on my windows partition, (on the desktop to be precise). What's the best/easiest way to recover them?

Just boot to Linux, a live CD will do, and back up the relevant files. Then stick your XP CD in and run a repair install (press enter at the first screen, then "R" after the EULA screen), which reinstalls all the system files without overwriting your programs, settings, etc. - works nine times out of ten for me.
