HP Pavillion ze4300
1.53-GHZ AMD Athlon XP 1800+ CPU
1gb sd ram
14 inch screen
for $450
Now here's the thing. I'm in a bind with $ right now, so 450-600 is my range.. and even 600 is pushing it. I need something to do some design work on while I'm overseas. This thing should be ok with my wacom and photoshop7... but anyone have any other suggestions? I wish I could use this for some lite video editing, but... hmmm... I don't know if it could keep up with that.

A bigger screen would be nice. Does it have a video card?
laptops are like PDAs or mp3 players, upgrading them is usually out of the question. therefore: yes, your OEM HP laptop will come with a vga. That machine is a great standard for basic crap. If you plan on doing video editing (wtf?) on a laptop, I suggest you get a video-editing job which would supply you with a high-end laptop so you can do business travel..

By all means don't get an HP laptop. They suck...
They overheat, they're noisy, they have recharge problems and shutdown at random. I've had two. The first had a defective network card, the second would reboot bizarrely. I've been disappointed by HP's printers and their support for OS X.
Short word, get a decent desktop for 600 if you want to do design on it. You won't get anything worthwhile for 600 bucks in the laptop range. And stay away from HP.

if it works it's not a bad grab for $450 but if you're strapped for cash don't do it.
If you really want it, tell him you have $390 to spare and you can't possibly pay any more than that period. Take it if he bites and ditch it if he doesn't

Not all of them. I have a two year old nx9005, and even though it's on almost constantly, with me also playing games on it, it hasn't been sent in for repairs once. The burner is beginning to finally fail, but it's not bad enough that I want to send it in.
Having said that, HP is a faint relic of what it once was. :'(
