Here's the issue, subject: Compaq Presario 5650LA
PIV:2Ghz.
1GB RAM
Videocard: Ati all in wonder radeon.
OS Windows XP: SP2.
Every time i start a task that needs some sort of "advanced" graphic commands (Read: Games, emulators, even running videos on media player classic) the video/programs starts to lag...to the point that the picture is frozen, the sound suffers the same problems...and it takes a while to close the aplication.
Additionally, the fan sounds more loud than usual, it's like....it's at max capacity 100% of the time (the sound starts after executing a task in windows, and stays like that)
I updated ATI drivers, no good, scanned for virus and spyware, same result, i checked inside, to make sure everything was installed and connecter firmly (mainly the RAM), no good, i used scandisk/chkdsk and defragged teh volume and is still the same.
Note that i had this problem before, formatted, and it's still there (I don't recall how or why it started, i noticed the issue some months ago, i installed Age of Empires and to me, it seemed weird that such an old game lagged with my current computer specs)
Any suggestions? need more info?

I had a similar problem with my old laptop. It turned out the Hard Disk was in PIO mode, and was causing lag whenever there was HDD Access. Assuming you've tried updating your video card's drivers, go to the Device Manager, your Primary IDE bus (or whatever your HDD is on), and change it to use Ultra DMA if it's not already.

I was guessing if could be the HDD's fault.
The Primary IDE bus it's indeed, set to Ultra DMA mode 5.
I'll fiddle with some setting in the BIOS (is not like i haven't changed those already, got the same results, and restored to fabric settings...still, the PIO/DMA info might be useful, thanks a a lot.)

I was just running in hardware acceleration disabled mode and everything was slow as shit, with videos freezing up everything and other stuff. Just a thought..

I'm frankly sick of people misusing the word "lag"

Thanks, i checked the settings but they're in accelerated mode. >>5
Mind giving me the proper term? you know, just in case i decide to post this elsewhere?

"Slowdown" is an appropriate term, I think. "Loss of performance" is also a good one.
die elitist fuckers. as for the question, either you haven't installed your video card drivers or your video card is FUBAR.

I reinstalled everything like twice after the format (ATI Catalyst drivers, video card drivers)
I dunno, i'm still betting it's some HDD, RAM or even computer BIOS issue (which i also tried updating) ..not sure if it's Hardware or Software related ..probably the first one, i mean, after making a factory restore, complete format and all that.... weird issue.

Thanks, might as well use those terms next time! especially the last one. (i was going to use slowdown, but the "Loss of performance" is not gradual...nor very smooth)
