I was really psyched about using Unix and currently am using Debian, but after just recently reading that all that ftping I've been doing is basically as insecure as anything I could do with Linux, so I found out about ssh and it being the standard for any sort of secure transactions.
So I read like 10 tutorials, and I still know absolutely nothing. This shit makes zero sense. Is there some sort of newbie tutorial respository, because I'm spending like 6 hours failing at doing the simplest shit.

You just want to connect to a SSH server? Just type
ssh -l username(your user name in that computer) host(computer you want to connect to; name or IP)
then say yes, then enter your password in that computer.
There are Java SSH clients too, Google for them. As for Windows, PuTTY is a good client and has both GUI and commandline versions.

2: windows ssh is just as confusing, maybe moreso, furthermore i wouldnt need ssh if i didnt use linux.

4 i need to serve and login. suppose i should have said that. thanks for the java tip, though- a graphical client may be easier to figure out..
5 debian manpages are history lessons with some vague information on what the program does, then a list of letters followed by nonsenical notes like "this does x to the -kr" I'd like to hear how you learned to create an ssh client using only deadend googled forums and tutorials written for people who already know ssh.

how can you possibly have trouble with debian
apt-get install ssh
configure it
open a port (22 by default IIRC)
use a telnet client to log into it
seriously if you can't install and configure ssh with apt you need to get off the interbutt

In windows: use PuTTY. It's just like a telnet client.
In *nix: Instead of "telnet <host>", it's "ssh <user>@<host>"

Installing and starting sshd is the first thing I do with a new computer so I can connect to it over the network.

WOW MAKE IT EASIER FOR ME BECAUSE U KNOW ALL I NEEDED TO KNOW WAS HOW TO APT-FUCKING-GET IT I ACTUALLY KNOW HOW TO RUN AN ENCRYPTION SERVICE USED BY THE MILITARY AND TAUGHT BY 150K A YEAR TECHNOLOGY COLLEGES RIGHT OFF THE BAT BECAUSE IM INSTINCTIVE LIKE THAT.
I still haven't got the server working because of a (surprise surprise) java error!
C:\SSHTools-SSHDaemon-Win32-0.0.9\bin>sshd-start.bat
Looking for JNI dependency MSVCP60.DLL
Searching PATH for MSVCP60.DLL
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: main
Are there any SSHD servers that actually work? I'm starting to get very very concerned over the fact that there's something like 100 million people out there and not one of them can write a fucking GUI for SSHD. Fuck SSHD, people can sniff my mouse transitions and witty insults to CSS players that AWPed me in the cs_office hostage room, this shit isn't worth it.

Wtf it's a fucking server you don't need or want a GUI.
Also Debian does not have a C:\ prompt or use batch files.
You're really stupid. Getting sshd running is no harder than getting telnetd running. You don't need to know shit about how it actually works.
But you could just keep blaming others for your stupidity, I'm sure that'll help alot.
All I needed to know how to do was "apt-fucking-get" ssh to set it up. Apparently the millitary hires people far stupider than the 22 year old kid running the electronics department at Target to run their encryption services
O I GET IT MAYBE U SPEAK NAVAJO get over yourself you fucking republican
