Domains and workgroups with XP pro

I'm logging into a domain with a XP Pro machine so that I can use a couple of network drives.  However, when I log into a domain, I lose my local workgroup privileges. (shared local printers, folders, ect…)  If I log into my computer (without the domain) I can access my local workgroup, but can’t access the network drives.

I’ve been using the “computer name changes” settings. (right click “my computer” – properties – “computer name” tab – change ) But I can only select either the domain or workgroup.

My Win98 machines handle both the domain and workgroup fine.  Is this just an XP thing?
