I'm on a computer running an older windows (98 I think) I downloaded some episodes of a show and they were in an unkown format. So I chose a format and it didnt play. I cant change it through right-click, properties. I know I am an idiot. Help me, please?

What was the original file extension? Maybe it just requires a codec?
For reference towards other folks what show is it as well? Never know when someone else may have had the same problem. I only mention this because my upgrade was recent as well.

No, it was an unknown format. So it asked me what program do I want to run it in. I chose the wrong program.
