mona font under debian

Hi, I'm running debian 3.1 and I installed the xfonts-mona package; but firefox shows gibbers where there should be AA. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get mona fonts to show up properly?

Can you actually select the Mona font for Japanese text in Firefox preferences?

I also tried adding support for japanese text (along with english and english/us) but that didn't help either.
