For a while now, my computer just restarts whevever it feels like it and fails to give a damn. I was wondering if you guys would know what it could possibly be. Thanks.

Sounds like a processor stabily problem
Try adding some voltage to your processor. Either that or it's a hardware failure issue.

Oh yes. But if it's hot there it could be power sags/dropouts and/or brownouts. >>1
Got clean power?

In reply to #2 : How do you add voltage to the processor?
In reply to #3: And what do you mean by clean power?

Sounds like a bluescreen. System properties -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery -> and uncheck "Automatically Restart"

Best idea you can ever give anyone with this problem. Dont even know why windows has this checked by default

I thought it was a troll at first. Windows has an "automatic restart" button? Is there an explanation for this bullshit?

I think the reasoning was, "Why bother the user with unnecessary details? If the machine crashed, get it back up as quickly as possible."
A lot of people were bitching about this feature when XP first came out.

You can get all that bluescreen info from the syslogs, can't you? That's the first place I'd check if I had frequent, random restarts.
If it *is* a processor stability problem, cranking the volts would be the thing I do after I've eliminated all other problems. I know that the OEM fan that came with my AthlonXP was crap, and my Athlon had a very firm temperature limit. It was rock solid stable up to 150F (~65C), but the instant it topped that, blammo.
I'd be sure to check for heat as a potential cause. One fun experiment is to run your computer with your case open and see if you still get the random restarts.

Would heat still affect it if you reside in a cold climate? I've had this problem for the longest, meaning I cannot get large downloads/torrents completed in one setting. I have the information if it's needed, it looks more like some sort of program/driver malfunction. 10-12 hours after I turn it on I get this wacko BSOD.
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
*** STOP: 0x000000D1 (0xF217E100, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0xF6F76C3F)
*** HSFHWBS2.sys - Address F6F76C3F base at F6F55000, Date Stamp 3f4676d7
I've had it since I built it, not sure what part it is that's acting up or if it's Hdrive related or what.
Sure, heat could affect your machine if you're in a cold climate. The box is typically indoors where the heaters reside, right? I say the same thing to you--- the easiest way to see if heat is the issue is to run your machine with the case open and see if you still get the same crash-happy behavior. And get some canned air to clean out your heatsinks, while you're at it.

At least we're getting somewhere. This kind of error usually occurs when your hardware is unstable. For example, CPU overheating (or too much overclocked) or your ram is giving you errors.
First (and easiest) thing to do is to check your ram with memtest: http://www.memtest86.com/
after that go into your bios and check the cpu temp. if it's not there you can touch the heatsink after it's been running for a while. if you feel like you'll get a burn if you hold your finger there for a few seconds it's probably overheating.

When it's cold here I just take my computer's case off and use my heatsink as a radiator. When it's hot I turn all my case fans around to point at my face. Heh.

i think the assumption was supposed to be he likes it cold, therefore thinks it couldn't overheat if it's a balmy subzero temperature or someting.

if i touch my laptop on the bottom after its been on for a while it feels like ill burn myself...is that a bad sign?
Probably not. Laptops are made to get much hotter.
They're also a great contraceptive if you use 'em on your actual lap, kinda' like dipping the boys in extremely hot water, but with more pain and less benefit.

That was it, ram errors. I think it's fixed now.

P4 Laptop? ;)
laptops are (IMHO) designed to be placed on an desk or equall flat surface so the air from the cpu-fan can get away and fresh cool air can come in.
when my gf and me watch stuff in bed we always place the laptop on an tablet and not directly on the blanked
if it doesnt get better there are some coolers for laptops out there like this http//p/... or this http//p/... (sorry german text only)
