Serial ATA problems

Ok. So I'm installing a 250 GB SATA on this machine for the first time. Everytime I try to enter Windows (XP), it locks up. If I wait for around for like 5 minutes, I starts up chkdsk and apparently can't read/write the drive properly so it doesn't chkdsk and tries to enter Windows, locking up somewhere along the way.

Oh yeah, it's a 250 GB Seagate Barracuda on a Abit AV8 mobo. Athlon64 3200+ CPU

Now, I've got the VIA SATA RAID drivers installed and it says they're working and, of course, Service Pack 2

I managed to format it without entering Windows (FAT32 - Want to put Linux on it)

I can boot up fine once I disconnect the disk, but as soon as I reconnect it, Windows won't run.

I've formatted the system disk and re-installed Windows XP already ...

Any ideas?

Why in god's name would you format a disk with fat32 if you want to put Linux on it?

Because NTFS only works 100% with Windows NT bases systems?
There's some development on NTFS drivers for Linux I know, but Linux still doesn't support NTFS 100% ...

Right?
