Looking for GNU/Linux program for iPodShuffle

Name: FrogofTime 2005-07-25 16:26

I've seriously enjoyed using my new GNU/Linux computer, but I have stumbled onto a problem. When I try to use GTKpod to sync my music with my iPod Shuffle, it transfers the files just fine, but leaves the Shuffle_Order and Track_Order files unchanged. Since I personally suck and am only using Ubuntu, the latest version of GTKpod that is within the repositories is 0.88. Are there newer versions of GTKpod out there that do properly sync to an iPod Shuffle, or do I need a different program in order to do it properly? Is syncing an iPod Shuffle properly on a GNU/Linux machine impossible at this time?

Congrats on choosing Ubuntu. That distro is doing wonders for taking the fear out of Linux. And we owe it all to a millionaire from space.

As to your question, GTKpod website is here: http://www.gtkpod.org/about.html and it says the latest version is  0.94. I don't know if it fixes your problem because I can't be bothered reading the docs. There is a deb package in the downloads section but in my experience these rarely work in Ubuntu due to dependency issues. It would be nice if Ubuntu were more compatible with the Debian tree.

Anyway your best bet is probably to download and compile the sauce yourself. It's not hard, you just extract it, change to the new directory and do:
./configure (not always necessary, don't worry if nothing happens)
make
sudo make install

Or wait until the package maintainer updates the package in the Ubuntu tree. Which will probably when Breezy comes out.

If the new version hasn't fixed your problem, read the docs and google carefully (someone will usually be talking about it on a forum somewhere) and if that doesn't help file a polite bug report with the devs.
