I just wiped my HDD clean to factory settings, now I need real good codec pack. The last codec pack I remember installing was, I think, was the K-Lite codec pack. Any suggestions?

(http://www.theorica.net/codecs.htm) It plays subbed anime and ogm, nothing else needed. It's a very clean uninstall as well, from my experience.

I suggest you reading a few articles on how things work and getting the idea that codec packs are here to screw your computer in the ass. Seriously.
If you only play and do not encode things (which wish to use a codec pack would suggest), you should be fine with just ffdshow (http://ffdshow.sourceforge.net/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=Getting+ffdshow). The 2005.03.03 never crashed on me, so don't worry about it being alpha.
To play things, your best bet is MPC (http//sourceforge.net/...
I strongly advise against K-Lite because installing more codecs than you need is bad for system stability. CCCP contains just the basics, check out the wiki page for download link and more information.

ok, CCCP sounds pretty solid but how do you properly unstall the previous codec on the system?

Messy as hell if you installed something like ACE codec pack. Run the installer for the previous codec pack again and see if there's an uninstall option. If not, you might have to Google around on the specific codecs and filters installed to find out how.

er, I haven't installed any codecs specifically but I did install Win XP Service Pack 2 and Nero ShowTime (which came with the DVD burning program bundle). Would it be safe to just install the codecs?
CCCP is the most solid codec pack out there, but personally it sounds a bit commie.
I recommend installing everything separately:
Zoom Player (best player out there)
FFDshow
Matroska Splitter
VSFilter
AC3Filter
CoreAAC
CoreVorbis
and other things like OggDS and something to decode mp3
That way you have complete control over what you have installed, and you can update each one separately.
lets you choose what you want to install, includes fucking everything. i use i wipe my pc

k-lite is a hoard of useless crap that's not needed.
The CCCP is developed by encoders and haali, the writer of the splitter for the Matroska containter. We have tweaked the CCCP for precise the reliable playback of 99.9% of all video codecs out there. While installing everythign seperately MAY be a reliable thing, there's still the chance that you may b0rk somthing during your efforts.
As for cleaning a already de-virgined system, use the CCCPi, or CCCP insurgent, which can remove most messes created by other codec packs like the ACE or k-lite packs.

My suggestion is that once you've cleaned yourself of all codecs, install ffdshow, QuickTime Alternative, RealAlternative, Media Player Classic, and some codec analyzer like G-Spot, then you're done. If some vid won't work, you install the codec it needs, until all vids work.
