PC Restarting

Name: Anonymous 2005-07-12 17:06

Hi,
The PC was workin fine until an extra stick of RAM was added.  On power up it beeped then restarted.  When the new RAM was removed, the problem persisted.    CMOS has been reset, slots changed etc but nothing has fixed the problem, any ideas?

The mainboard is a Abit KD7 and the 2 RAM sticks are 256MB (old) PC2700 and 512MB (new) PC2700.

Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Static shock death! You're screwed, buddy. You might have just killed the old RAM stick, so try switching it with the new one (assuming you haven't already tried that), but it looks like your latest upgrade just got a lot more expensive...

nope ... same effect with any RAM stick ...
I wonder if it could be anything else than static though.

It seems the likeliest explanation. If something was working before you screwed with it and isn't afterwards, you broke it while doing so. Other than clumsy tool damage (slipping/dropping a screwdriver), static damage is the biggest killer of current motherboards (I'm not including the notorious "diharritic capacitors" of a few years back - I'm always coming across machines of that age now dying with the dreaded capacitor bulge).

Fair enough, lucky it's an old machine, and it isnt mine.  Thanks for the help.

Don't change these.
