Reading manga on PDAs

Name: Anonymous 2005-05-26 17:06

I'm considering buying a PDA (like Palm's), but one of the things I want to do with it is reading manga scans (I don't scan them myself, I download them, but I own the mangas, mind you). All I'd need is to be able to browse image files in the same fashion as ACDSee in fullscreen, i.e. setting up a zoom factor, scrolling the file with 4 keys to read it, and moving to the next/previous picture with 2 keys.

Does anybody know if this is a good idea? Any particular architecture and/or model you may recommend (because there's better software to do this, or whatever)?

Thanks

if its manga, get one with a bigger screen so you can read.

But I dont know much about PDAs. :(

There is acdsee for PDA (ACDSee Mobile (Full Retai_).ace).  HP is the cadillac of PDA, but I have a Axim and I guess it's okay for what I use it for.  They only come with 96MB of memory or so, so figure on buying a CF or SD card with the PDA.  Get one that has landscape mode, as that's probaby easier to read.  Also, who knows how wel you can read manga on that small screen unless you do a lot of scrolling.  I don't know if acdsee mobile can read images stored in zip files.  Anyway.. short answer: get what you want and it's possible.

Thanks for the info!

I've checked various models but I don't know what to do. They look like toy computers to me. PocketPCs are more powerful but fairly expensive, and Palms don't seem so cost-effective as they used to be.

Maybe I should get a PSP so I can also play games? I haven't read much of its image viewer - I wasn't able to find any information on it!, so I don't know if I can zoom, scroll, and move to the next file quickly to browse manga.

The problem would be text. Sony didn't have the balls to make it a reader. All of these devices are lacking so much in software. But maybe, just maybe, I could have text rendered on images (a quick PHP/ImageMagick script would do the job, I'll take care of it) so I can read some previously prepared text in the PSP too. What do you think?

Already did, but I don't like legacy formats, and I want to have many texts and mangas to choose depending on what I feel like reading.

Translation: I like gadgets, and I really want to rationalize that fact.

This is a solutions looking for a problem.

People don't purchase PDA's as much as they used to unless they can also be used as a "smart-phone". Maybe you are better off with a "Kindle".
