You'll need one of the type/brand that your broadband provider uses. Also you may have to reprogram it for the particular mode ie bridging or router but instructions can be had online for most.
Around here, they often show up in second-hand type stores (esp Ciscos) for around $5.00US.

when you signed up for your net service your ISP should have asked if you wanted to buy or rent in the first place. if you don't mind paying a little more you can buy from them, that way you know it's compatible with their service and they'll give you the instructions for programing and such.
