Just tracert or ping the name of one computer from the other.

a) run cmd and type "ipconfig".
b) click on the connection icon in the systray, then click "details".

Actually unless you've set up an IP for each computer manually, they won't have one.

Go into your network config (found in the "properties" of the TCP/IP driver for some reason... Windows...) and give one of them an IP such as 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.0.2

They do if you have internet connection sharing enabled.

Or you could just buy a simple 4-port hub for around $20.  That'll eliminate all these problems, and you can have two friends bring their computer over and have a nerd party.  I mean LAN party.  Whatever.

Yup.
Hardly anyone uses crossover cables for that reason.

I usually call that a good excuse to eat someone out of house and home, and download child porn through THEIR connection.

The gaming is good, but the fucking-with-someone is much much better.

I like to do that on the unsecured Wi-Fi networks around town, Especally starfucks.

Don't change these.
