open source OS

Hay guys, I was wondering if someone could recommend a good open source OS (if there are any). Free preferably

You have GOT to be kidding us...

If you're not then:

Linux
BSD
Solaris
Darwin

and to a certain extent
Mac OS X (not free though, and not completely open source).

LOL.I meant out of all the open source OS's, which one do you guys think works the best. I've heard bitching about *BSD and haven't looked into Darwin much.

GNU/Linux works should work "best" on a desktop computer, due to wider hardware support, and most applications are better supported on that platform then all other unix variants.

On server usage, I don't know. I find freebsd running better then GNU/Linux on my sucky-hardware playbox, pentium 1 with 48MB ram.

(open?)BSD kernel modified by Apple, used by Apple. I belive OS X and Tiger run on top of that. Apple were kind enough to opensource they're modifications.

XNU is a Mach 3.0 kernel with a *BSD hybrid subsystem running in kernel-space. Darwin is the complete operating system that includes XNU and Unix-like services.

I also think the XNU subsystem may include parts of MkLinux, but don't hold me to that. I'm not sure how they'd be able to get away with redistributing GPL'ed code under their own license.

Obviously it depends on what you need it for, but I always recommend Ubuntu Linux to people who are just looking for a desktop system.

Don't change these.
